CBD Peanut Butter For Dogs: Benefits and Uses

If your pup is anything like other dogs, they absolutely love peanut butter. As in, you hold out a spoon with some peanut butter on it, and your doggo’s tail is wagging at 100mph!

Because of this, peanut butter is a great place to add in healthful substances that your pup might be less inclined to consume when presented on their own.

As research accelerates on how CBD can be used to help support dogs’ overall health, mobility, and relaxation, the combination of CBD and peanut butter is only going to become more and more popular.

Dogs and Nut Butters: What is the Connection?

It is no secret that dogs love peanut butter. And really, who can blame them? Not only is peanut butter full of nutrients, it also tastes amazing.

Recently, other nut butters, such as almond butter, have also gained popularity as substitutes for peanut butter.

So, does it matter which nut butter you use? And why are nut butters good for dogs, anyways?

Why You Should Feed Your Pup Nut Butters

Firstly, since nut butters are derived from nuts, they are excellent sources of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Protein is one of the most important nutrients for your dog to eat, since it helps build muscle, provides energy, repairs tissue, and supports strong bones. Even just a half a spoonful of nut butter can give your dog a massive serving of protein that will help keep them healthy and strong.

Fiber is another important nutrient, as it helps regulate digestion and soothes the gastrointestinal tract. Fiber can also help maintain a sense of fullness and can help prevent your pup from becoming overweight in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. Obesity in dogs is associated with many health conditions, so you need to help your pup stay at their optimal weight.

Finally, nut butters are full of essential nutrients, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, vitamin E, zinc, and vitamin B. Each of these vitamins and minerals play their own unique role in your dog’s body, working together to make your dog as healthy as possible.

The only downside about nut butters is that they contain a lot of fat. Even though this fat is mainly unsaturated (the healthy type of fat), too much fat can irritate a pup’s stomach and lead to unwanted weight gain.

Luckily, as long as you stick to the recommended nut butter serving size -- which depends on the type/size of your pup(s) -- your dog should be able to digest nut butters generally well. Even just a small spoonful of nut butter is enough to provide your dog with all the nutrients they need without triggering any negative consequences relating to fat consumption.

Nut butters are also a great place to hide the medication that your dog needs to consume but always tries to avoid. Nut butters like peanut butter are also highly compatible with CBD oil. You have two options: you can either buy a peanut butter that is already infused with CBD, or you can add pet tinctures (CBD drops) to pet-friendly peanut butter.

Finally, you should feed your pup nut butters because, well, they taste great!

Which Nut Butters Are Safe For Your Pup?

We have been using the term “nut butter” a bit broadly, but there are actually a few nut butters that are dangerous and sometimes even toxic for your dog to consume.

Avoid the following without exception:

  • Macadamia nut butter
  • Pistachio nut butter
  • Walnut butter
  • Pecan butter
  • Any nut butter containing added sugars or sweeteners, especially xylitol -- too much sugar can give your pup tummy issues, and xylitol is toxic to dogs
  • Any nut butter containing cocoa/chocolate, or which is made from chocolate-covered nuts -- dogs should not eat chocolate in any form

The best way to avoid the last two points on this list is by reading the ingredients carefully on any nut product you buy and sticking to products that are specifically marketed towards your pet. If you are not sure, check with your veterinarian first.

On the flip side, these three nut butters are perfectly safe for your pup (in moderation):

  • Peanut butter
  • Almond butter
  • Cashew butter

Unless your dog has a peanut allergy (which is pretty rare), we recommend feeding your dog peanut butter, since they will have the easiest time digesting it. Plus, it is a lot cheaper than other nut butters while being just as nutrient dense and delicious. Just remember to stick to sugar-free or reduced-sugar organic peanut butters, preferably made from unsalted or lightly salted nuts.

CBD For Dogs: The Benefits

You have likely heard of the many benefits CBD oil offers humans, such as supporting restful sleep, easing discomfort, and promoting mental wellness. Maybe you have even tried CBD oil yourself, or use it regularly! But did you know that some dogs can benefit from CBD oil as well?

Just to go over the basics, CBD (cannabidiol) is derived from the cannabis plant, meaning it is found in hemp and marijuana. It is important to note, however, that CBD is not the compound found in marijuana that gets you high, and it has no intoxicating effects. Most CBD products have either nondetectable levels of or less than 0.3% THC, the component that does cause a high. Additionally, all hemp manufacturers extract their CBD from CBD-rich (or other cannabinoids that are not THC) hemp rather than THC-rich marijuana because it is federally illegal to use any marijuana-derived cannabinoids or terpenes.

When you consume CBD, it works with the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in many different body systems, making it very important to overall health.

In dogs, CBD’s most promising benefits are in supporting their overall mobility, promoting relaxation by helping them adapt to their environments, and general wellness.

Especially for older dogs, mobility is one of the first items that need attention. CBD can help support mobility, and can even work to soothe everyday discomfort that your dog might experience from an extra strenuous day at the dog park!

Additionally, many dogs are unhappy and can get worked up during car rides, when meeting new people, or when left home for the day, among other scenarios. CBD can help to calm them by helping them relax, allowing them to adapt to their environments.

You should always talk to your veterinarian first before giving your dog CBD. They can go over any potential side effects your dog may experience, as well as how CBD may interact with other medications your dog is taking, illnesses they may have, etc.. Though most dogs tolerate CBD well, some may experience increased thirst, drowsiness, and slightly lower blood pressure. These side effects are not necessarily dangerous on their own, but may be inadvisable if your dog has other health conditions.

Veterinarians can also help you pick out the proper dose depending on your dog’s size, and even the best way for you to feed CBD to your dog.

In general, you can give your dog anywhere from 1-3 mg of CBD per 10 lbs

Of course, these are just estimates, and depending on your dog’s specific needs, your veterinarian may recommend an alternative dose. Ideally, you should start out with a low dose and build your way up to the optimal amount slowly so your dog can get used to the CBD. Pay attention to how they respond and it may help you arrive at an optimal serving for your pup in particular.

On this note, even though we have distinct size options such as Small, Medium, and Large Pets, we actually recommend going with higher potencies to help reduce the amount of tincture oil you’re giving to your dog in efforts to reduce the amount of fat they’re ingesting at once.

As an example, if you give your small dog 4mg of CBD, which equates to about a half dropper (half a mL) of our Small Pet Tincture, that same 4mg dose of CBD could be given with our higher potency Medium Pet Tincture in just a few drops instead of half a mL, making it much easier on your pet’s stomach since they’re ingesting less oil, i.e. less fat.

As for how to give your dog CBD, pet tinctures are simple and easy to use -- just put a few drops of CBD (depending on your pet’s dose) directly into their mouth or right into their food. For many dog owners, CBD peanut butter is also a convenient and tasty way to give their pup some hearty nutrients and CBD benefits at the same time!
