Hemp Oil For Skin: Top Benefits and Use Guide

Glowing skin: we all dream of it, but for many of us it proves to be elusive. Plus, it seems like the search for the perfect skincare product is neverending. Can’t it just be easy for once?

Recently, hemp oil has been getting attention for its many benefits throughout the body, including with mental wellness and soothing relaxation. In addition to all of this, you can even use topical hemp oil to bring your skin health to the next level with its strong antioxidant properties. In fact, hemp oil might just be the skincare product your daily routine has been missing.

Hemp oil is derived from hemp, a genetic within the cannabis plant family which is related to marijuana but contains less than 0.30% THC. The main difference between hemp and marijuana is that marijuana’s predominantly contains the intoxicating ingredient THC, while hemp contains THC at negligible levels. This means hemp oil is not intended to get you high, but it does pack all of the soothing benefits of CBD and all the other compounds found in the plant.

Without further ado, let’s get right into what makes hemp oil so great for your skin, its benefits, how you should use it to best feel its effects, and where can you find the best hemp oil skincare products? For all this and more, read on!

Benefits of Hemp Oil For The Skin

We cannot wait to walk through all the incredible ways hemp oil can support your skin health, but before we get to it we just wanted to disclaim that the ingredients accompanying hemp oil are equally important when deciding between products. By using well formulated hemp oil products regularly and consistently, you can experience the following benefits:

  • Hemp oil maintains balance in your skin. When imbalance occurs, you are more at risk of developing acne or experiencing signs of aging, such as wrinkles. Hemp oil restores balance and keeps skin healthy.
  • Hemp oil relaxes irritated skin. This is driven by its strong antioxidant properties  which enable hemp oil to soothe the skin and minimize irritation that the skin may experience.
  • Hemp oil helps regulate sebum production. Sebum is the oil that is naturally present on your face. You need a certain amount of sebum on your skin at all times, but when there is too much of it you may get acne. Hemp oil’s ability to help regulate sebum production also plays a role in maintaining balanced skin.
  • Hemp oil supports dry skin, by nourishing and hydrating the pores. This is mostly driven by the accompanying ingredients so be on the lookout for everything else in the product!
  • Hemp oil can keep your skin looking and feeling smooth. This is because hemp oil when paired with the right ingredients is effective in hydrating the skin. Hemp oil also functions as an extra layer of protection for the skin, locking in the all great nutrients and hydration while minimizing the effects of external factors.
  • Hemp oil is rich with antioxidants that can promote better skin health. Antioxidants protect the skin cells from any damage, making your skin look stronger, healthier, and more supple.

In simple terms, hemp oil when formulated properly can make you more confident in your skin by bringing out the best in your skin, on top of  supporting better overall skin wellness. When your skin looks/feels good, you feel at your best!

How To Use Hemp Oil

Now that you know the many ways hemp oil can benefit your skin, you are probably more than ready to start using it, or at least giving it a try! However, for hemp oil to work in the best way possible, it needs to not only be used correctly but formulated properly as well. That’s why we have here all the tips you need to get the most out of your hemp oil skincare products!

Patch test the hemp oil before adding it to your routine.

Look, we understand why you might want to dive right in and start using hemp oil as soon as possible. However, just like any other skincare product, we recommend that you first test to make sure it is not going to irritate your skin. This is particularly true for people that have sensitive skin or allergies. After all, what is the point of using a product if it is just going to make your skin feel worse? It’s important to note that even the best products can cause issues to some skin types and is why almost every skin care company over time has 100s of products that seem like the same thing but have slight variations.

Luckily, most people are able to tolerate hemp oil & CBD products very well, but when it comes to your skin every single ingredient matters, not just the hemp oil or CBD.

To patch test your hemp oil skin cream, apply a small amount to an area of your skin that you can leave alone, such as the inside of your arm. Let the product sit for about 24 hours and observe if any redness or itchiness occurs. If you do experience irritation, unfortunately the product in question may not be compatible with your skin. If not, you are very likely good to use the product on other parts of your skin!

By the way, we recommend patch testing any new skin product you use, whether it is a simple hand lotion or an acne treatment, so you do not risk damaging your skin.

Use hemp oil in the right order.

This step is especially important if you are using hemp oil on your face, since that is where the majority of your other skincare products will be targeted as well. In general, you should apply the lower molecular weight products first (typically water based) and the higher molecular weight  products (certain oils, waxes, etc.) last, in order to ensure that all of them are able to be absorbed into the skin. To get a little technical the lower molecular weight products which allow them to penetrate deeper into the skin while the higher molecular weight products don’t penetrate as deeply but they still add great value by creating a light seal that locks in all the great nutrients you’ve applied and blocks all the bad particles in the air from breaking in. It is important to test the higher molecular weight products for a longer period of time because for some people they may clog the pores and cause breakouts.

Start using hemp oil slowly.

Just because hemp oil passed the patch test (this goes for any skin care product not just hemp oil), does not mean the best approach would be to immediately make it a daily part of your skincare routine. This may be frustrating, but your skin will still need some time to adjust to this new product, and the hemp oil will be most effective when your skin adapts to it (and all the other ingredients). Starting too heavy too soon can still bother the skin, so try using hemp oil every other day at first and eventually transition to daily use.

In addition, when adding hemp oil, or any skincare product, to your skincare routine, best practice is for it to be the only new product you are adding, at least for the first couple of weeks. The reason for this is that you want to know that this hemp oil skin cream is effective for your skin, but it will be harder to gauge what’s driving the results if you are using multiple new products at once. Instead, go one at a time and wait to see if you are getting your intended benefits before ditching a product or starting a new one.

Understand that results will not happen immediately.

The first morning after using a new skincare product, you may wake up expecting to discover that your skin looks completely different. Unfortunately, even the best skincare products do not work that quickly.

If you start slowly and build up to consistent, daily use of a new product, you will likely see results within a couple of weeks. The best thing for you to do is remain patient and keep trying even if your skin does not yet experience the results you expected right away. With these habits and understanding that sometimes you may have to try a few different products before finding what your skin needs... Eventually your efforts will pay off.
